WPVM is an independent non-profit community radio station serving the Asheville area, exercising and fostering freedom of speech as enshrined in the First Amendment. The radio station is a voice for popular democracy. Stewardship of the earth and celebration of life are basic values. WPVM promotes justice, equality, and civil discourse to advance understanding among peoples.
In bringing voices from the community to its airwaves, WPVM seeks to present perspectives neglected or underreported by the conventional media. Unique regional talent is showcased, and a wide range of underrepresented music, other arts, and culture, news and public affairs are broadcast. Volunteers are vital to WPVM, and are supported in their endeavors by the station. All operations are conducted in accordance with the WPVM Mission Statement and the official WPVM Broadcast Policy. The parent of WPVM is the Mountain Area Information Network (MAIN), a local, non-profit internet service provider and proponent of media democracy.
A program "demo" is an abbreviated radio show, produced by the applicant to present his/her show idea; to demonstrate (demo) basic understanding of, and skills in, producing a radio program; and to give WPVM a sense of what the proposed show might be like on the air. Demos should be submitted on CD, preferably in data/MP-3 format, though MP-3 format is not required. Cassette tapes also are acceptable.
Program demos shall not exceed 15 minutes in length.
Note: Demo tapes will not be returned. We are not able to make copies for you. Please make sure you have a copy of your demo before you submit it!
If you are producing a music show, or plan on integrating music into a news/public affairs program, please edit the music down to six or more brief 30-60 second samples to give a sense of the music you propose to air. Voice-over portions of the demo program must include an "intro" (an introduction to the show), at least two official station identifications ("This is WPVM, 103.5 FM in Asheville, a broadcast service of the Mountain Area Information Network....). And an "outro" (a professional-like conclusion to the program). Please make the last words spoken on the demo the name of the producer/contact and his/her email or phone number.
Please include a completed Program Application (see below) with your demo. DJs producing an all-music show should submit a play-list with your application. (That is, a list of the songs used on the demo, and at least a dozen examples of music that would be played on future broadcasts, to convey a sense of the fabric of shows.)
All submissions should be dropped off at, or mailed to:
